Happy Holidays from the Reverie team! Here are some of our holiday favorites.

Every year when December rolls around, About A Boy is a must-watch for me and my mom. As you watch Hugh Grant's frosty heart inevitably thaw at the connection he finds through Nicholas Hoult, Toni Collette, and Rachel Weisz, your own heart, whether hardened by the concluding of another long year or simply the coming of winter and turning back of the clocks, can't help but do the same.

Taglined “the feel bad movie of christmas”, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo  is my favorite Christmas media because of how desolate it is. Christmas time is a time for joy and cheer but TGWTDT grounds me in the bleakness of winter. Is it because all my Christmases have been swelteringly hot? Or is it because I find more beauty in the cold nature of winter than the cheer of Christmas lights? Either way, nothing says Christmas to me like Rooney Mara’s lip piercing.

"The only real comfort against the cold are those you keep close to your heart." From HTTYD: Gift of the Night Fury. The HTTYD trilogy was always a favorite series of mine and I loved their Christmas special. It's amazing how deep of a bond Toothless and Hiccup have, and I can't get over the trust they have in each other. I hope everyone can find a friend like that. :)

When I think of winter and what it  means to be "cozy" inside, I think of this miniature pink house on the  Island of Misfit Toys in the 1964 Rankin-Bass Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. I have had actual dreams of this house: the low ceiling, the crowded beds. For me, it is the essential image of hygge: total comfort and closeness.

A new addition to my list of favorite holiday movies is the 2019 movie Klaus. I watched this movie for the first time last year on Christmas day with my family and was surprised by its beauty and originality. This fictional alternate origin of Santa is a heartwarming story that will put anyone in the holiday spirit.

I always cite my greatest movie theatre experience as seeing the holiday-season release Star Wars: The Force Awakens in theatres at age 12. I revisit it nearly every year around this time; in my eyes, its nostalgic plot, triumphant beats, and consistent laughs cement it as an official holiday classic.

I can't do Christmas without watching A Charlie Brown Christmas. I've been a big fan of Snoopy and Charlie Brown since I was a child, but as I grew older I realised what it really represented: the joy of friendship, found family, and learning to love each other despite our flaws. Christmas was never a big thing for me and I don't really celebrate with family, so this movie keeps me company and warms my heart. :)

My favorite holiday show is Dash & Lily. It’s a short romcom-esque show on Netflix about a girl who meets a guy through a book during the holidays. It reminds me of spending the holidays with my best friend Nicky, and life before college.

My favorite piece of holiday media is the polar express. Growing up without internet, polar express was the only Christmas movie we had on dvd. It was terrifying; the characters absolutely scarred me as a child. But we've watched it every year for the past 15 years and it continues to be a celebration each Christmas Eve.

I love Eartha Kitt's 'Santa Baby'. It's deliciously villainous while balancing strong sexuality and playfulness. The perfect Christmas burlesque song, all I can think about is Dita Von Teese slinking down the stairs in a Mrs.Clause get up singing along to Eartha.

I always like to rewatch the entirety of the YouTube show, "Too Many Spirits," with Ryan Bergara and Shane Madej of Buzzfeed Unsolved fame. The cozy fireside ambiance and humor is the perfect pick-me-up in the stormy, depressing winter/exam season.
